Eight year old girl died due to internal injuries on wedding night

The horrific face of humanity is yet again on display in Yemen where an eight year old girl was married to a man who was five times older than the girl
Yemen child MarriageOn the first very night of wedding, the man tried to indulge in a sexual relationship with the girl due to which she got severe internal injuries in her genitals and died

The Gulf News reports that the girl suffered a tear to her genitals and severe bleeding.

Later activists in Yemen called police to arrest the man and girl’s family members for such a heinous act. According to the activists, such marriage should not have taken at first place. Such acts are a shame towards society and immediate measures must be taken, as carrying out only awareness programmes will not help the cause.

Protestors protesting death of girl hope that such incident will highlight the cause of such ugly marriage trend in Yemen and will help to fight the cause in future.

Bloggers in Kuwait have also spoken out against the girl’s horrific death, saying her family should not be allowed to have children.

Poverty is also a big factor that plays role is such practices. Good prices offered to such poor family brides are an instant attraction to them and they cannot resist such offers.

More than a quarter of Yemen’s females marry before age 15, according to a report in 2010 by the Social Affairs Ministry.

Another tribal custom that is followed in Yemen society that young girls can be shaped in to an obedient wife. This helps in fueling such practices.

In September 2010, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labour to give birth, a local human rights organisation said.

Yemen once set 15 as the minimum age for marriage, but parliament annulled that law in the 1990s, saying parents should decide when a daughter marries.
